Pittsburgh is a beautiful city that lies at a point where Monongahela and Allegheny rivers join, forming Ohio, on the northwest side of the Allegheny Plateau. The wooded hills of western Appalachians surround the city. Although steel and coal are the backbones of Pittsburgh and Carnegie and Mellon are the two names people see on a lot of things, the city has traveled a long distance from its industrial and gritty past. It is rather a metropolis with gardens and parks bounding the modern city centre and the rivers with various established cultural institutions like Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Today, Pittsburgh has a lot to offer travelers and has been named many times as one of the best places to be visited in the world.
These botanical gardens were donated by Henry Phipps, the real estate baron, in 1893. The garden offers a great variety of experiences to the travelers. The Victorian Glasshouse with 13 rooms if the main feature of the garden that always has something new for the travelers with each changing season. The bird and butterfly garden, Japanese, aquatic, children’s and perennial gardens, sensory garden and color wheel garden are the highlights of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
The Carnegie Science Center is the huge museum situated on the northern bank of Allegheny River. This center is has been build with an emphasis on science and technology. It has more than 250 exhibits to offer to the visitors that deal with science and technology. The Pacific Coral Reef Aquarium and Rangos Omnimax Theater are the unique and most important features of the museum.
The Carnegie Museum of Arts is one of the internationally recognized institutions of Pittsburgh. The museum has a wide range of exhibits for the visitors including the extensive collections of the Post-Impressionist and Impressionist paintings, European and American paintings of past two centuries, decorative art, architecture, and sculptures. The museum was named after its founder Andrew Carnegie.
This is a complex having various historical building and museums. It is placed in lawns and gardens spreading over five acres of land in residential East End of Pittsburgh. The Frick Art Museum is the highlight displaying Helen Clay Frick’s art collection. The collection has French, Italian and Flemish paintings through eighteenth, sixteenth-century draperis and Chinese porcelains.
The Andy Warhol Museum offers a comprehensive collection of the most famous artist of the city and the American Pop Art Pioneer. The exhibits include all the facets of the prolific career of Warhol as a filmmaker, painter, author, magazine publisher, celebrity gazer, stage designer and a painter.
The Strip District is located on the river Allegheny at the Golden Triangle’s north-east corner. The district was occupied by railroad installations and warehouses earlier but today, it is one of the main tourist attractions of Pittsburgh. It is a home to dining, art, shopping and various kinds of markets to buy meat and other food products.
The Point State Park is situated at the tip of the heart of Pittsburgh, the Golden Triangle, at the junction of Monongahela and Allegheny rivers. In the past, this park was the Fort Pitt’s site, but today, the park has a blockhouse only.
Duquesne Incline is a funicular railway that has served the businesses and railways of the Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights of the city since 1877. It is a working museum that utilizes two 1877 original cable cars, with an upper station that provides photos and displays the complete history of the incline.
The National Aviary is the only independent nonprofit indoor zoo in the US, located in Pittsburgh. The zoo, solely dedicated to birds, has more than 500 varieties of birds that represent unique more than 150 species of birds around the world. This is a large walk-through exhibit that gives a distinctive experience to the travelers.
The Heinz History Center is a well known educational institution that inspires and engages a diverse and large audience understanding for the present, links to the past and guidance for future by the preservation of regional history and presentation of the American experience with the Western Pennsylvania connection.
