The magnificent Big Buddha Temple, also known as Wat Prah Yai, is situated on the small offshore island of Ko Phan. Ko Phan is a rocky island which is located on the north east corner of Koh Samui. The iconic, 12 meters high, a golden colored statue of Buddha is the top attraction of this temple. Visitors climb the steep stairway that is flanked by the gigantic, mythological serpent ‘Naga’ to reach the viewing platform. From here, tourists can get a 360-degree view of the surrounding areas. Numerous stalls which sell local items dot the vast temple grounds.
The color saturated Chaweng Beach will paint brilliant memories in your mind. The brilliant blue waters of the Chaweng beach are edged by palm fringed golden sands. Chaweng beach, one of the most popular beaches of this island, acts as a magnet attracting locals and tourists alike. Swimming tops the list of popular water sports on Chaweng Beach. Kayaking, snorkeling and diving are other activities which one can enjoy here. If you want to reach a state of complete nirvana, spread a beach mat, and enjoy the soothing rays of the sun. There are numerous food stalls, hotels and restaurants near Chaweng beach.
The Namuang waterfalls are probably this island’s best kept secret. There are two waterfalls of the same name on the island. Namuang means purple in Thai language. From a height of 18 meters, the Namuang 1 waterfall tumbles down a rocky slope to plunge into a limpid green pool. The Namuang 2 waterfall, cascades down from a height of nearly 80 meters. These beautiful waterfalls are located approximately ten kilometers south of Nathon town.
This is one of the islands lesser known attractions. Laem Sor Pagoda is located on one of the most scenic sections of the island. This ornately carved golden pagoda sits right at the water’s edge. The entrance to this pagoda is guarded by two, fierce looking, sword wielding warriors. The pagoda is decorated with numerous statues of Buddha. There is peaceful forest located close to this magnificent structure. Visitors can enjoy a memorable picnic in the dappled shade of these trees.
Elephant Rock which resembles a massive boulder is actually a gigantic rock formation known for its epic proportions. Despite the fact that this rock does not actually resemble an elephant it is called the elephant rock for its sheer size. Visitors throng this site to enjoy a moderately intense hike to the summit of the rock. From here you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding areas.
This stunning temple complex is located on the north east coast of this tropical island. This temple was constructed in 2004. Wat Plai Laen is situated close to the big Buddha temple. The main attraction of this temple is the massive statue of Gunayin, the Goddess of mercy and compassion. The temple also has numerous statutes of other Gods and Goddesses. The temple is encircled by a massive lake which teems with colorful fish. This tranquil temple is the ideal place to spend some quiet time in communion with God.
