Arugam bay is arguably one of the finest surfing spots in Sri Lanka. With its steep waves and strong currents, surfing aficionados from this country and across the globe arrive in droves to tame the wild waves. This beautiful crescent shaped stretch of sand is located on the south east coast of the country. Besides surfing, swimming, kite surfing and wind surfing are popular pastimes on this beach. The best time to visit this idyllic beach is from November to April. There are numerous restaurants and guest houses which dot the periphery of the beach.
Settle down in a hammock and watch the waves, crash onto the sandy shores of Mirissa Beach. This horse shoe shaped, sandy beach is located just four kilometers south east of the sleepy fishing town of Weligama. The thick tropical vegetation which edges the beach adds to its overall charm. Surfing enthusiasts come to Mirissa beach to ride the massive rollers. After a fun day at Mirissa Beach visitors can enjoy a hearty meal at the no frills cafes, which dot the periphery of the beach.
Hikkaduwa Beach, another awesome surfing beach, has put Sri Lanka firmly on the tourist map since the early 70’s. Hikkaduwa beach which literally means ‘Sword of Knowledge’ is located in the vibrant south coast of the country. Surfing is the main water sport on Hikkaduwa beach. Visitors to this beach should not miss the opportunity to tour the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, which is located just a few hundred meters offshore.
Nilaveli beach is by far one of the best beaches on this tropical island. This stunning beach is located on the North West region of the island – just 20 short kilometers from the port city of Trincomalee. The turquoise blue waters which lap the shore, is in stunning contrast to the golden sands of the Nilaveli Beach. The calm waters of this beach are ideal for enjoying a host of water sports which include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and wind surfing. Additionally, many people visit this beach just to enjoy the dazzling sunrises and brilliant sunsets.
The sublime beauty of Bentota Beach beckons one to visit this slice of paradise over and over again. This beach is located just 62 kilometers from the capital city of Colombo. The vast azure blue tropical sky, kisses the frilly edged jade blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The soft, powdery sands of this beach will uplift the spirit in all its pristine, golden glory. The addition of swaying palm trees and the presence of colorful fisherman’s boats which bob lazily in the ocean, add to Bentota beaches’ overall appeal. Swimming, snorkeling, diving, jet skiing are some of the popular water sports which one can enjoy on this beach.
